Juneteenth 2026: Celebrating Freedom and Black Excellence

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, and since 2021, it has been recognized as a federal holiday.

The Significance of June 19th

On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the war had ended and that enslaved people were now free. This moment represented a turning point in American history — a long-overdue fulfillment of the promise of freedom. Today, Juneteenth is a celebration of African American freedom, culture, and achievement.
